Although most commonly seen in bridal hair, vintage hair combs are an easy way to add glitz and glam to your favorite go-to hairstyles. Like everything else retro, hair combs seem to be making a comeback in a major way, and do a fantastic job of bridging traditional with modern, which is what every fashionista strives to do when establishing and expressing her unique sense of style.

With summer quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to perfect a couple of cute ways to rock a vintage hair comb into your favorite styles.

Sexify an Updo

Although updos tend to be sexy by nature, adding a vintage comb to yours will ensure that you stand out in the crowd by adding glamour and sparkle to your look. Simply tuck a comb into a fold of your updo, or accent an understated portion of your hair to take vamp up your ‘do.

Secure a half ponytail

Hate just securing a half pony with a hair tie? Try hiding the hair tie, or not using one all together, by using one or two vintage hair combs instead to hold the top half of your hair firmly in place. Make sure to spritz some firm hold hairspray such as Big Sexy Hair Spray and Stay to maintain your gorgeous style all day or night long.

Jazz Up the End of a Braid

Do you ever think the rubber band type hair band that reminds you more of the bands the dentist gave you for your braces looks super awkward at the end of super cute accent braid in your hair? A cute vintage hair comb is definitely a great way to hide that unbecoming rubber band. Luckily, there are lots of smaller combs that will complement the end of a braid beautifully, with floral designs being especially feminine and cute! Learn how to do summer's hottest braid, a half-up fishtail braid here, and add a vintage comb to your look to be sizzling hot in the summer sun.

Accessorize Your Natural Strands

Finally, who says you need to wear your hair up in order to rock a vintage hair comb? Oh wait... nobody. All you need to do is check out Dianna Agron here to see how adding a vintage hair comb to your look can elevate your glamour and sex appeal is one sweeping swoop of hair tucked back with a hair comb. Maybe give this look a try when attending a summer wedding, or on a first date with a potential summer love.

Dianna Agron looks glamorous with her hair swept back by a vintage hair comb

So, the next time you are out shopping with the girls, make sure to scout out some consignment shops to score some great vintage hair combs to glamourize your hair.

For the love of hair,

In the early stages take advantage of hair makeup such as Fullmore which colors the pinkness of the scalp to cover hair that’s no longer dense. Certain hair styles may also disguise thinner patches, depending on the location. For example, bangs can sometimes add an illusion of volume to thinning or receding hairlines.

For the crown and thinning areas around the face, lightweight extensions called Medi Connections can be fitted and hand-blended to these areas and add extra volume and thickness. This is a great option for women with mild Alopecia or the early stages of female pattern hair loss. Medi Connections boost existing hair while allowing for natural regrowth, normal washing, styling and every day activities.

In more dramatic cases we can use the Intralace system, which uses a very fine mesh to introduce new natural hair into existing hair. This is a preferred option for women with moderate to chronic hair loss or thinning. It’s made of a breathable mesh and integrated and incorporated very naturally. This system is preferable to wigs for the modern woman who can budget for this lifestyle choice. It affords women the opportunity to participate in activities which might be otherwise limited in a wig, such as swimming, windy outdoor events or sports.

Women effected by hair loss should remember that whatever the case, there’s hope! Although hair loss can be devastating physically and emotionally, there are many options available for an array of issues and lifestyles. Most importantly, one should maintain a positive attitude while considering options and finding a solution.

Tired of your boring wash-dry-repeat cycle? Wash your hair at night, ditch the heat and bring on the waves - and make your pillow do all the work.

Braided waves

After washing, towel dry your hair, then spray all over with a texturizing spray (like Brocato Back to the Beach Texturizing Mist). Roughly split your hair into two sections, then loosely Dutch braid each side to the end, securing with a clear elastic. Gently loosen the braid by pulling out small sections of hair, then sleep on your braids overnight.

In the morning, remove the elastics and gently unweave your braids. Finger comb your waves, then spritz your locks with a medium-hold hairspray like Big Sexy Hair's Spray & Stay.

Twist & pin waves

Then, take a small piece of hair and wrap it into a small circle, from the end to the root. Pin the circle against your scalp with two bobby pins, crossing them over each other. Repeat until all of your hair is twisted and pinned against your scalp, then sleep on it. In the morning, remove the bobby pins and gently finger-comb your strands. Spray all over with a medium-hold hairspray like Big Sexy Hair's Spray & Stay.

For extra hold, work a curl-defining gel like DevaCurl Light Defining Gel through your strands. Then, divide your hair into two or three sections and rope braid each section to the end, securing with a clear elastic.

After sleeping on your braids, remove the elastics and finger-comb your strands. Spray all over with a medium-hold hairspray like Big Sexy Hair's Spray & Stay.

What You'll Need :

Peel of 1 orange (chopped)
2 strawberries (chopped)
1/4 cup of sugar
3 tbsp of grapeseed oil
4 tbsp of water

Benefits :

Orange Peel helps to cleanse the skin, clears acne and scarring, brightens, and exfoliates.

Strawberries are high in antioxidants Vitamin A, B1, B2 and C which make it a great wrinkle fighter, and also helps to brighten and even skin tone. The Vitamin A in strawberries help to regenerate new cells, leaving your skin smooth and supple.

Grape seed oil is high in Vitamins C, D, and E, and the fatty acids in these vitamins help with acne as well as scarring. The polyphenols (anti-inflammatory antioxidants) in grapeseed oil also help to prevent future breakouts.

Sugar is a gentle exfoliant.

Start by washing your fruits under cool water. Use a knife to slice off the peel of the orange and chop into squares.

Toss the orange peel in the sun or leave out on your countertop to dry for 24-48 hours. Once dry, the peel should crack, just use a firm object (mallet, small hammer) to crush it into powder form. Pulse your strawberries in a blender and combine with orange peel powder. Fold in grapseed oil, water and sugar.

Once you have a nice consistency, massage the scrub over your entire face (avoiding eyes). The scrub consistency should feel a little sticky, so you can leave it on as a mask for 10-15 minutes if you'd like.

Warning : This scrub smells dangerously delicious, try and avoid the temptation to eat it!

Rinse off thoroughly with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Feel free to double this goodness as a body scrub! For drier skin or dry patches, you can add in a spoonful coconut oil. Your skin will feel amaaaazing!

Don't forget to also follow this routine with a moisturizer (preferably one with SPF). Part of changing our skin for the better is maintaining a good, consistent regimen. You like-y? Take a few selfies and Tweet or Facebook us!

I have always battled with my naturally wavy, and always frizzy hair. Back in the day, I relied on heavy-duty gel and blow-drying with a round brush to smooth my hair out. Then fortunately flat irons hit the scene, which saved me mucho amounts of gel and frustration and has been my go-to styling routine ever since. However, not even the most expensive flat iron and top of the line hair gel can prevent my frizz from putting itself on proud display during those über humid, hot Midwest days.

Yes, I had heard of keratin hair straightening treatments before, but since I don’t have consistent curls, did not think a keratin treatment would be worth my time or money. Until I heard about Überliss.

Jada Beauty asked if I wanted try out the new straightening treatment fresh out of Brazil, that is appropriate for gals just like me, women with frizzy to mildly curly hair that desire lower maintenance, straight, sleek locks. Excited at the idea of no longer having mandatory blow-dry sessions, I eagerly agreed, and off to the Salon Commodities test salon I went to receive my complimentary Überliss treatment, but not before I received my fancy Überliss hair care products from Jada Beauty in the mail.

Überliss products arriving in the mail via Jada Beauty

The treatment consisted of three steps to transform my hair. First, a fiber expander was sprayed on my hair, and under the steam heat I went, to let the fibers of my hair open up to receive the chemicals.

After some time spent under the dryer, the fiber expander was rinsed out of my hair, and Step Two was applied. The actual chemical crème, the “Fiber Restructure,” was applied to my hair in order to make it stronger, straighter, and smoother. I spent some time under steam heat once again after the crème was applied, comfortable with complimentary beverages and magazines.

Once the crème was rinsed out of my hair, the most time consuming portion of the treatment took place- the actual straightening. It took about 45 minutes for Tracy, my stylist, to straighten out my hair one very small strand at a time, where I covered my ear with a spoon when she was close to them, since the iron was so hot.

After the straightening was complete, a hair mask was applied to my hair to über deep condition it, where I, for a final time, sat under the steam heat to let my hair absorb all of the nutrients from the deep conditioner.

My hair after being straightened the first time

My hair was washed one last time with the Überliss shampoo and conditioner, Überliss oil applied, and a final dry and iron took place, revealing the straightest hair I have ever seen on myself. I could only wonder what my hair would look like in a week’s time.

The finished product!

Before I get to the end result, I do want to mention two downsides to the process. One: you cannot pull your hair back in any way (no ponies!) for 3 full days (72 hours) to allow the hair to fully set. They advise against getting hair wet during that 72 hour period as well (Hair can be rinsed after the treatment but NOT shampooed. It isn’t recommended however it is definitely an option.) Pulling it back could cause permanent kinks in your stands, and getting it wet would reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Secondly, it completely faded out my hair color. If you don’t color your hair, no worries! But if you color like I do (bold and beautiful red, baby!), get the treatment at the end of your six weeks, because you can apply fresh color one week after the Überliss treatment.

Several weeks later, I am LOVING my Überliss treated hair. I have only used my blow dryer once since my treatment, and my hair looks incredibly smooth and healthy. Also, I am also able to style however I want to! I've only tried a couple of my favorites, such as the Top Knot:

Top Knot love!

and, the sock bun. Wondering how to achieve the perfect sock bun? Check out our tutorial here!

Sock bun love!

I was told I could curl it, too, with the help of a curling iron, but have yet to try it out. I'm enjoying my sleek, silky straight locks too much! And now that spring seems to finally be making itself warmly (and humidly) known in Chicago, the timing could not have been better.

<img class="size-full wp-image-17644" alt="My hair after several weeks of Uberliss.

Sweep the hair from your face and bring on the boho with a chic half-up fishtail 'do.

- One clear elastic
- Kenra Volume Spray 25 Hairspray

Let's get started.

1. Take a small section of hair near your crown.

2. Divide the section into two equal pieces.

3. Start your regular fishtail braid by taking a piece from the outside of your left-hand section.

4. Cross the strand it over the top of the left-hand section and add it to the section in your right hand.

5. Repeat this step, taking a piece from the outside of your right-hand section and crossing it over the top to add it to the section in your left hand.

6. Continue your fishtail, but instead of only braiding the pony, bring in sections from either side of your head (like you do in a French braid) to add to either section. Only bring in a few strands on either side until about half your hair is incorporated into the braid.

7. Once you've incorporated about half your hair, continue your regular fishtail braid to the end of the pony, then secure with an elastic. Hairspray that baby and...voilà!

Want to put all your hair back? Try a full French Fishtail by continuing to incorporate all your hair into the braid and then finishing the fishtail at the end of the pony.

Now show us yours! Tweet photos of your fishtail to @shopJadaBeauty or @hannahshaner, or upload them to our Facebook page.

Normally we tend to give great advice for taking care of your hair, but what happens when you don't have any? Bald men, and sometimes women, need advice just like the rest of us. Just because they don't have hair doesn't mean they get to live life care-free.

Just because their there is no hair doesn't mean it is an easy do to take care of on the day to day. Having a bald head normally comes with a lot of maintenance that includes lotions, shaving, and sometimes waxes. Some may see it as a way bigger task.

Keeping a proper head bald requires constant shaving to keep that dome smooth and, while a five o'clock shadow may look good on your face, it definitely doesn't on your head. In order to keep up with your hairless head, you should be shaving it at least every two days to prevent unwanted new growth. Doing this will also stop your hair line from showing which is why a lot of men start shaving in the first place. And to get that head extra shiny you should begin with a warm towel on your head until it cools and try to shave in sections (not like you are mowing the grass).

The summertime can be exceptionally dangerous for those who have decided to shed their locks. It is best to use a higher SPF than you might normally use on your body until your head gets used to the UV rays beating down on it all day (even then, should should still later on the sunscreen. A lower SPF will eventually have you covered, though).

With that much exposure to the sun it might be a good idea to wear a hat the first couple of times you head outside and only peek out from under it for small amounts of time. Using things like Miziani Supreme Oil should only be used once your cue ball has been seasoned by the sun. But it will give you and overall softness for your head while giving it that smooth look.

And although the bald look has been traditionally for men, there have been some women who have been able to wear the hairless look... and wear it well, I might add. For those who are suddenly deciding to lose the locks, it is best to start with a buzz and then go in with the razor.

Try to remember that for the first time you really need to take it slow and don't forget how sensitive your neck can be. It may be wise to have someone else reach back there until you become handy with the razor. Also, shaving your head, just like anywhere else, you will need an after balm to take care of the fresh layer of skin and help in the healing process.

As you can see, there is still a lot going on up there, while it may not seem like it at first. Bottom line: you have to take care of the noggin, hair or no hair.

For the love of hair,

Brendon

While hair loss is sometimes out of one’s control, such as in health-related cases like Alopecia and female pattern hair loss, there are many cases in which thinning or loss can be prevented. Remember that hair loss can be caused by bad lifestyle habits and poor nutrition. These are things that can be addressed by consuming lots of vegetables and fresh fruits, regular eating, exercise, vitamins and a good positive mindset.

Stress is a big factor in hair loss and can have a lasting impact. Finding solutions that help one deal with their own stress is vital, such as meditation, consulting with a loved one or taking a long walk to wind down.

Other steps incorporated into one’s daily routine can also make a big difference in hair health. For example, choosing a styling aid that offers UV protection, such as an SPF hair spray or leave-in conditioner, will protect hair from the sun’s damaging rays (Try Sebastian Halo Mist for protection and added shine). It’s also important to incorporate a deep penetration conditioner into your weekly hair care routine and protect your hair from heat with a thermal protectant (Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray both protects from heat damage and speeds up blow dry time).

Wash regularly but not too often – every few days should be enough depending on your hair type. If it’s thinner, don’t go too long without a wash as it can become oily, dull, boring and look thoroughly awful.

When it comes to styling, select good tools. They don’t have to cost a fortune but they should have basic features such as heat settings so you can customize to your hair type.

When possible, the key to hair health and maintenance is taking a proactive approach with a well-rounded lifestyle and being good to one’s hair and body.

I’m going for the Rashida Jones look. Any ways, to achieve that look, I want those waves so I bought a curling wand. What’s the first thing I did before purchasing anything? I went straight to my friends and social media to figure out the best one to buy.

I had one friend say hers was ceramic and she really liked it. Which got me thinking? What does that even mean? Like clay pots from middle school pottery class? So I did a little more research to figure out what all those hairstyling tool buzz words mean!

Ceramic, huh? Turns out this is the stuff from ceramics class. It’s a hard brittle substance made by baking clay. When it comes to our hair style products it’s usually ceramic plating over the metal. Typically, the more ceramic used (very fragile!), the more expensive the styling tool is going to be.

How does it work? The styling tools create negative ions to counteract the positive ions and all the heat to spread out evenly. It also is able to self regulate it’s heat so it won’t get too hot.

Ionic, who? The name says it all. This styling tool uses the power of negative ions to break up water molecules on the surface of the hair into smaller components. With the water broken down into smaller components they are able evaporate more easily therefore drying time is significantly cut down.

The good news? Because you are spending less time blow drying your hair, you’ll take less time getting ready and minimize heat damage!

Tourmaline, what? It’s a precious stone, more precious than your middle school ceramic project. It’s known for is ion-emitting and infrared-generating properties. This stone is crushed up into little pieces and infused into the styling tool.

Does it use ions? It does use ions, but a greater number of ions. With the extra ions comes shiny, silky hair.

Titanium, where? Also known as Ti on the Periodic Table of Elements, this metal is corrosion resistant including sea water and chlorine. This is the styling tool you want to take on vacation. Titanium can specifically beneficial when it comes to the flat iron. It’s smooth surface prevents hair from snagging on the iron.

What makes it so great? It’s as strong as steel and 40% lighter. It retains higher heat longer and distributes is consistently. They also say it’s ability to maintain the heat allows it to diminish fungus and bacterial growth on the hair (perfect for dreadlocks!).

Looking for the perfect product to go along with all of these heated styling tools? I suggest the Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray and right now if you sign up for our newsletter you'll get an extra 25% off your order (what a deal!).

For the love of hair,

It's time to beat the heat! But really, it's very important to combat the heat damage that both summer heat and styling tools can cause to your hair.

Two of my favorite products for eliminating frizz, protecting my hair against UV rays and heat from styling tools are the Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss and Kenra Hot Spray. Here's a review on how each of these products can help you beat the heat this summer:

Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss

Always challenged to find styling products that work with curly hair, this product works really well for eliminating frizz. It is a light formula gel-based product that is best used on fine hair to tame frizz, smooth dry ends and add a silky texture after heat application.

Pros:

-Works well on both wet and dry hair -- for wet hair, this product eliminates a lot of frizz after blow drying my hair with a diffuser; for dry hair, this product really tames down a lot of frizz and adds a lot of silky texture

-Helps prevent heat damage from styling tools -- I noticed that my hair felt smoother after blow drying when I used the silkening gloss

-Aragan oil-effect -- Aragan oils are one my absolute favorite products but they can get expensive, this product has some of the same effects including ultra moisturizing impact to both hair and skin

Cons:

-While it's not necessarily a negative, this product has a very light formulation so you need to use a little more product to obtain a big impact

Overall:
I love this product for curly hair! I've been using it daily on my wet hair before styling and then taming down any dry or frizzy pieces once my hair is dry. It gives a very silky glow to the hair and I highly recommend it for the summer months.

Kenra Hot Spray 20

While I don't use a lot of thermal styling tools because of my curly hair, I know that a heat protectant will help my hair look even more silky for when I do use a lot of heat. The Kenra Spray 20 is strong hold spray that prevents hair damage from both the sun and styling tools.

Pros:

-Shiny effect - After using this product before and after blow drying my hair with a diffuser, my hair looked so much shinier and not glossy, which I loved

-Added a lot of volume without frizz - By applying this product starting at the base to the root, and then blow drying, I achieved a voluminous curly look without a lot of frizz

-Perfect for summer months - the heat protectant formula mixed with the shiny effect makes this a perfect product for spraying on your hair before spending a lot of time in the sun

Cons:

-You'll need to use this product several times to see the effect on your hair

Overall:

This is a must-have summer haircare product! Constant heat on your hair can have a very damaging effect so it's important to protect it with the right products. I highly recommend this product, especially if you're using a lot of thermal styling tools.

Have you used the Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss and Kenra Hot Spray? What do you think?

For the love of hair,

Megan

You’ve listened. You’ve cut and colored. You’ve styled. You’re pretty darn happy with your work. But when you spin the chair around for your client to fall in love with your skill, you’re met with a less than enthusiastic response.

Working in a service industry means running the risk of encountering an unhappy client. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, chances are you’ll find yourself in the unpleasant situation at least once.

Having savvy customer service skills in play will always help you address even the worst situations. We asked salon owners Jessica Steele of Beehive Beauty Shop in Wasilla, Alaska, and Kendra Meyer of Shear by Kendra in Indianapolis for their tips and tricks. Here’s what we learned:

Be All Ears

Both Steele and Meyer preach the number one customer service skill: listen! Complaints aren’t fun, but interrupting the client or talking back is NEVER the right solution. “This is not the time to defend anything, it’s the time to be quiet and allow the client to be heard,” said Steele. “Always allow the client to have their feelings and their experience at the salon. You will never be able to convince anyone that their bad experience was not really that bad,” she said. After they get their time to vent, offer sympathy and ask how you can make the experience better and what you can do to fix the problem.

Read the Situation

Some clients are in a bad mood for other reasons--a fight with a significant other, a stressful day at work, etc. Meyer suggests reading those situations and trying to diffuse any complications that might arise before the appointment even gets under way. “When I offer my clients wine and chocolate after a long day at work, they react like I just let them win the lotto and I could almost do anything and they would love it!” she said.

Fess Up

Sometimes you can’t escape a slip up. If you know something is going awry during the appointment, don’t wait to address it only if the client notices. Steele always tells her stylists that being upfront with a client is the best way to avoid a big problem. “You are owning up to the fact that if given the chance you are capable of fixing it," she said. "If you wait for the client to tell you they are unhappy with something then they are automatically on the offensive and you are on the defensive.” Steele points out that bringing it up first puts your walls down, helping to show you’re human, caring, and an honest, reliable hairdresser.

Offer Perks

A product is often an easy solution for a minor problem. If a complaint is on the smaller scale, like hair feeling dry after a color treatment, Steele said she might offer a free product, like Matrix Total Results Repair Conditioner, to address the problem. Just don't forget to include a heartfelt apology for the complication!

Cut Them Loose

There will always be clients you just don’t click with, and they often are the ones that complain the most. If you have a client that you can never seem to make happy, Steele says you should explain that you feel you aren’t able to fully understand their wishes and perhaps they might have better success with another stylist or salon. “Then you can remind the client it’s all about them and you want them to be happy,” she said, even if that means taking their business elsewhere. “We all want to be with the clients we love instead of killing ourselves to be with clients that aren’t a good fit.”

At the end of the day remember an unhappy client isn’t the end of the world. As Steele points out, this businesses is about having relationships, and relationships always have their “angry fits, arguments, much love and breakups.” It’s how you handle those moments of distress that determine how the rest of the relationship will go and whether your client will stick around to give you another shot.

For the love of hair,

The Basics

Name: Sarah Eutsler
Location: Indianapolis area
Who are you? I write and design things. Owner of On a Good Note Designs and Founder & Editor of twentysomething Indy. Chronic night owl, cat entertainer, Mac fanatic, and magazine addict with a Gilmore Girls/How I Met Your Mother obsession.

Salon Scoop

My Stylist: Ashlee Lewis, Medusa Salon in Anderson, IN.
Favorite Salon Experience: A few months ago I cut roughly 4-5 inches off my hair. It felt SO LIGHT. I have super thick hair, so I love that feeling when you make a drastic change and a literal weight is lifted off your shoulders. It adds a bounce in your step when you leave! Ashlee does an amazing job of removing the bulk to make it easier to manage.
Last time I got a haircut: Today (May 16)!
Hair Horror Story: I cut my own bangs about a week before a high school dance. They were way too short and, paired with the Louisiana humidity (where I lived at the time) a curly mess. I referred to them as my Uma bangs because they reminded me of Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. I also had an awful haircut right before the start of eighth grade. I was seeking Mandy Moore's short style from her How to Deal years and the stylist butchered my hair. I had weird choppy pieces. Even my mom cried!

Must Have Products

Shampoo: I tend to bounce around to different products, but currently I'm using Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Ultra Hydrating Shampoo.
Conditioner: Matrix Biolage Daily Leave-In Tonic.
Styling Product: This is probably awful, but I tend not to use that many products on my hair! I'm sensitive to scents so if I use too many I get a headache. When it's super hot and humid, I'll use a smoothing serum like Neuma Argan Treatment or Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. They also have the perk of cutting down drying time if applied to wet hair.
Hairspray: Neuma In Control Spray, but only when there's a special occasion and I really need my hair to stay in place.

Makeup Must: Rimmel London Eye Shadow Quad in Smokey Brun. It's a great drugstore find and overall I'm a big fan of Rimmel's eye shadows. I've been wearing this particular quad since middle school (though it's undergone a few name changes) and it's the perfect neutral set for my everyday wear. I'm rarely not wearing it!
On the Tips: My current favorite is Essie in Mink Muffs. I found out it's also Kathie Lee Gifford's favorite. Not sure how I feel about that! haha. I also love OPI in Pompeii Pink. It's a lot of fun for the summer, especially for a pedicure.
Favorite Splurge: I don't splurge that often, but when I do it's usually on a couple bottles of nail polish or a lip product like Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss in Starlit.
Routine Switch Up: My hair is what I tend to change the most. I get bored with it easily and might change the color once or twice a year. I'm constantly looking at new cuts, as well.
Girl Crush: Zooey Deschanel, Emma Stone, Ginnifer Goodwin, Drew Barrymore. And I basically want to be BFFs with Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey (especially after reading Bossypants).
Celeb Crush: Jimmy Fallon, John Krasinski, Jason Segel. Basically Jimmy and John's lip synch off might be the greatest thing to ever happen to me.
Beauty Confession: I cannot stand to not wash my hair every day! It gets oily quickly and I've read not washing it will help with it, but I just HATE the look and feel of greasy hair. It makes my face feel grimy. Plus, my hair never holds up well when I sleep. It gets super curly, which isn't a great look when it's short.
Favorite Beauty Tip: Eat lots of salmon and whole grains while avoiding sugar for clearer skin.

Listen up naturalistas! Summertime is the perfect time to explore the world of bold hair color, fly cuts and epically proportioned manes. Need a little inspiration for a new summer ‘do? Start with these 5 fun natural hairstyles.

Faux blowout: Channel your inner Diana Ross with a larger-than-life faux blowout. To get the blown out look without the blow dryer start with stretched out hair, detangle in sections, mist with Morroccanoil Treatment and water, then twist loosely and let dry. Got shorter hair but still want this style? Try adding extensions that match your hair’s blown out texture.

Shaved side hairstyles: Give your natural ‘do some edge with a little shaved action. Fashion the remaining hair into a pompadour, rock big roller set curls or a braid out for a fresh look. If you can’t quite commit to the shaved look, then try small braids or pin the hair up where you’d think about shaving instead.

Modern afro puff: Pull your afro puff to the side or push it to the front for a playful warm weather friendly hairstyle. This modern take on the afro puff works for a day out with the girls or a date night with that special someone.

The twisty updo: Keep your hair off of your neck and out of your face with a twisted updo. I love how the turns and twists on this add up to one funky yet elegant hairstyle.

Bold TWA: A cropped cut with fierce color is a great summer style option for the fearless curly girl. Keep your vivid color in tact for the long haul with paraben-free Brocato Vibracolor Fade Prevent Shampoo and Brocato Vibracolor Fade Prevent Conditioner.

Whether you’re just noticing your hair is beginning to thin, or you have been dealing with it for years – you are not alone. Hair loss is common among one in four women. In our society a man can still be brawn when he’s bald, but for women hair loss is a serious confidence-buster and often tied to a health issue, yet it often feels taboo to talk about it!

Hair loss is often stress-related but there can be hundreds of causes such as scars, wounds, burns, surgery, ME, MS, leukemia, cancers, frontal fibrosis, lupus, auto-immune diseases, genetic fining, female pattern hair loss and Alopecia Areata or Totalis or Universalis and traction Alopecia.

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common form of women’s hair loss worldwide. It’s often genetically linked and may be inherited from both sides of the family but not in a clearly defined pattern. An average head has up to 150,000 healthy hairs and sheds 100-125 of these a day. FPHL starts becoming visible when more than 100 hairs come out regularly. When the hair is shed by the root, the one that grows in its place can be finer and weaker. FPHL can start as early as puberty but is most commonly seen after menopause.

Alopecia Areata is patchy hair loss on the scalp or body that affects more than 3 million Americans. It can be diagnosed by a doctor or dermatologist to determine treatment, and in some cases Alopecia Areata will improve over time. The condition is unpredictable and could occur over many years. Alopecia Totalis is similar but affects hair loss across the entire scalp instead of patches. Traction Alopecia is caused by compulsive hair pulling, also known as Trichotillomania (TTM).

Pregnancy is an unusual time for hair loss as most women find that their hair is better than ever. The hair cycle consists of rest, shed, grow. Often in pregnancy this cycle ceases so we don’t shed. However, 16 weeks almost to the day many women report heavy hair loss and panic. This however in most cases is simply their hair that hasn’t been shed through pregnancy and in most cases should be no cause for alarm. However, if fine hair is in the DNA some women report that their own hair is significantly reduced through pregnancy and never regains its previous optimum fullness.

Regardless of the type of hair experienced, one should never lose hope as there are plenty of stylish and affordable options such as camouflaging techniques or long-term solutions that can be incorporated into any lifestyle.

You’ve probably heard of food trucks, but have you ever heard of fashion trucks? Yes, I'm talking about a truck where you find trendy (and super affordable) dresses, scarves, jewelery, and many more unique pieces and designs!

Last May, I met Heather Pirowski, owner of Indy's first boutique on wheels, retro101.

I was instantly drawn to her gorgeous curly red hair, big smile, and contagious laugh. She is the type of person you never forget and always wonder what they are up to next!

A few months later, Heather pulled me aside and me she had giant plans.

“I’m starting a vintage pop-up shop,” she said. “Do you think I am crazy?”

“Crazy?” I asked. “No, absolutely not. I am inspired! Tell me more!” I said back.

She began to tell me all about her ideas.

“So anyway, I got a little tipsy from drinking my wine and bought a bus off Craig’s List!” she said.

You love her, don’t you?! I had the chance to interview Heather about launching her business and plans for the future.

Ashley: So, I already know you well, but tell our readers more about yourself! Who are you and what makes your heart sing?

Heather: Hey there! I’m Heather, a 30 something mom of 2 boys – Alex, 10, & Finn, 5. I will be married to my best friend for 15 years this Fall. I’m from Northwest Indiana, the Region as we like to call it, and have lived in the Indianapolis area since I graduated from IU – Bloomington (during the grunge period).

Mmmm… what makes my heart sing – love that question! My heart sings when I hear the laughter of a child (especially my own) and when I can make someone smile.

My mission is to give a gift to someone every day. Many of my gifts don’t cost any money at all – could be as simple as a phone call to a friend I haven’t talked to in forever – it just has to be thoughtful.

Once I started doing this, I started to notice and appreciate the little gifts that I receive on a daily basis that I may not have realized before.

Ashley: Your mission is inspiring! So, tell us more about what inspired you to launch retro 101?

Heather: I opened up a pop-up shop with a dear friend during the 2012 Super Bowl at City Market in downtown Indianapolis. For those two weeks, I was immersed in such a great, entrepreneurial environment, which really fed my creative soul.

I loved the pop-up shop concept: popping up at different locations for a short period of time. What I loved even more was the idea of being mobile, like the food trucks. This idea manifested into purchasing Ellie, a 1978 Chevy short bus.

Ashley: I love that you named your bus, Ellie! It seems like you're really following your passion, but I'm sure there were a few bumps in the road along the way. Can you share any challenges that you had to overcome when launching your business?

Heather: I launched retro101 late Summer/early Fall of last year, which means I had to overcome this Midwest weather! Snow, below freezing temps and record breaking rainfall does not make for an ideal retro101 shopping experience. But, I have to say, not rolling out as much as I would have to in the Winter/Early Spring allowed me to focus on other ways to build my business: online shopping via Facebook and developing a custom t-shirt line that will be launching later on this summer.

Ashley: Interesting! Tell us more about how brand yourself on AND offline.

Heather: I really want the retro101 brand to convey FUN! I mean, it is pretty fun to find a super cute outfit for yourself and a gift for a friend all on a bus!! I hope to translate this experience that shoppers get on the bus online as well.

Ashley: I'm sure your customers love the online and offline experiences. So, where do you find fashion trends and inspiration for products?

Heather: retro101 carries all new fashions & accessories, but I absolutely love anything and everything retro! I get inspired by all of my housewives of the OC, ATL, Beverly Hills (I mean… who doesn’t?!?) Seriously though, I get inspired by the retro101 customer because women are looking for great looking clothes and accessories that are affordable and flatter many different body types. I also tap my fashion forward friends for help in choosing inventory to sell. Interesting enough, the guys have been coming out in full force asking me to hook them up with some cool fashions too, so I am looking into carrying more fashions for the dudes too (thanks Mad Men!)

Ashley: So when looking for new pieces and designs, how important is it for you to support local vendors? How do you mess the "shop local" message?

Heather: Shopping local extremely important for not only myself, but for our community. I carry many items that are locally designed and made, which I love!! Every item/designer has a story that I love to tell. I know that my customers love knowing a little tidbit about who makes it or where they source their products. I also strive to do a lot of events with other local businesses so that we can cross promote. It is all about building and supporting each other.

Ashley: We absolutely feel the same way at JadaBeauty! What advice do you have for other budding entrepreneurs in the fashion/beauty industry?

Heather: Reach out and connect with other people that are in the same stage as you are and start up what I like to call a Mastermind Club. It helps so much to be a part of a group that you can openly discuss what issues/questions you have and share your successes as well. This group doesn’t have to have other people in your industry – actually, it may even be better if they aren’t. Set goals for yourself and bounce ideas off of one another. In the beginning stages of retro101, I would meet up with a couple of friends on a bi-weekly basis to talk about where each one of us wants to take their business. Now, I’m a part of a group of fellow business owners who are taking their businesses to the next level, which is awesome to see and be a part of!

Ashley: I love the idea of developing a support group. Well Heather, thanks for your time today! It's been wonderful learning more about your story and retro101. I'm sure everyone is dying to know how they can find you! Where should they follow you?

Heather: I post my events/schedule on my Facebook page as well as on my website. I always tweet out where I’m rolling out to as well. I’m so excited to offer online sales via my Facebook page! I will posting “steals & deals” on a weekly basis! So stay tuned! Below are all of my sites:

Word of mouth marketing has long been the hairstylist’s best friend. But while plenty of happy (or unhappy) clients are chatting about you over coffee with their best friend, they're also broadcasting their thoughts over social media.

Sure, clients can talk about you and your salon on their own, but wouldn’t it be great to join in on the conversation? Twitter is one of the easiest ways to do so, and perhaps one of the best social media platforms to explore first. We touched base with Patricia Maritsch of Piqued Public Relations, a boutique PR firm in the Philadelphia area with a strong portfolio of lifestyle brands, to learn more about how you can turn Twitter into a worthwhile pursuit for your salon or stylist career:

A lot of salons and stylists have no idea where to start when it comes to Twitter. What would you recommend they focus on first?

Twitter is a place for conversation. Take part in it with other local businesses and clients. Follow the brands you work with and carry in your salon and get social. By participating in conversation you are on the radar of consumers and possibly new clients.

Why should an individual stylist maintain a Twitter presence on top of of their salon's social media efforts?

An individual stylist’s account in addition to the salon’s not only doubles your presence but also leaves more room for personality. People use social media to feel connected with those they otherwise wouldn’t have been connected. By creating a personal account it gives the impression of a more genuine relationship.

What are the pros of using Twitter to grow a social media following as opposed to Facebook or another social media platform?

One of the biggest pros I see in using Twitter vs. any other social media platform is the ability to gain more followers at a quicker pace without having to pay for advertising to do so. I also see Twitter’s constant flow of conversation another positive. Starting a conversation and continuing one is a lot easier on Twitter than other platforms, the process is more natural.

As Maritsch points out, Twitter is all about the conversation. So how do you join in? Just like you would in person. Ask questions. Respond to questions or other tweets you see from brands, blogs and publications, or clients. Announce exciting news, such as a new product line or service. Share content of interest to clients, like a great article on a local business or a blog post featuring a how-to of the latest style craze. Give tips and tricks.

Hashtags, or a tool used on Twitter to categorize tweets by placing a "#" in front of the category topic (ex: #hairsalons), are another great conversation starting place. Choose the "Discover" tab on Twitter to see the topics and hashtags trending worldwide, nationally or in your area to join in the conversation. Better yet, start your own! Maybe you want to share 10 summer hair tips. Tweet one a day and use a hashtag like #SummerHairTips or #Top10SummerHairTips in each one, helping to create a buzz. Or maybe you want to create a consistent one for your salon. Jada Beauty, for instance, frequently uses #supportyourstylist or #jadalove. They can also just be used on an individual basis based on the content of your tweet (#promstyles for an image of an updo a stylist recently did, for example). Another wise hashtag is the name of your city, helping you to show up on the radar when people are seeking to find the latest scoop on what's going on in your area.

The same type of content strategies goes for individual stylist's accounts. However, you can also consider sharing little glimpses of your personal life, like a tweet about your favorite TV show. As Maritsch explained, people like to feel connected, and Twitter allows them to learn more about a person quickly and easily. Just remember to keep things upbeat and positive. No one wants to work with a Debbie Downer, and under no circumstances should you complain about clients, co-workers, or the salon. The negativity will be recognized, turning people off of your services.

Overall, the more active you are in conversations on Twitter, the greater the likelihood of naturally drawing attention to your business. If a client or brand re-tweets--or shares--something you've offered, you're getting free attention to countless other followers, who in turn might follow you, re-tweet, or both. The key is to maintain the presence. Find the schedule that works for you and stick to it.

Want some inspiration? Here are a few examples of stylists and salons who are doing it right:

Kat Ross, a stylist and owner of Sin 7 Salon in British Columbia, offers a great mix of personality, humor, business, and articles that might be of interest to her clients and peers.

Melissa of Designs by Melissa in Philadelphia has a great visually appealing page, featuring strong, fun images for both her profile pictures and background. In addition, she tweets images of her work and what she's up to, showcasing her skills.

Salon Zen, based in Norman, Oklahoma, has a beautiful profile that fits their name. In addition, they offer a great variety of tweets, including: re-tweets on potential topics of interest for clients (thanks for the Jada Beauty love, guys), reminders of specials, product announcements (we love Redken, too!), and info on cancellations and stylist openings, another awesome way to use social media.

Ready to tweet? We thought so! Overall, social media--especially Twitter--is a chance to be creative and really show off your personality. Get out there and have fun with it, and don't forget to show your #jadalove and follow us: @shopjadabeauty. We look forward to tweeting with you!

Each spring, I look forward to that first mani/pedi. You know, the one you get the first weekend the thermometer tips 60 degrees. Getting your tips and toes in summer shape is a must before you wear sandals for the first time. Whether you prefer bold and bright colors or pretty pastels, you'll want to keep these pretty colors in mind the next time you head to the nail salon.

Dior Waterlilly: Mint is the color many of us are crushing on this year. It's soft and pretty without being overtly girlie. Into nail art? Try pairing mint with navy or charcoal gray for a bold twist. Into drinking cocktails on the patio of your fave restaurant? Think of how pretty mint polish will look while you're holding a tasty mint julep (see what I did there?)!

Julep Eden: Speaking of Juleps, my next color suggestion is this vivid purple. If you're more conservative when it comes to polishes, this shade is a chance to take a risk without diving too far out of your comfort zone. Plus it makes for an eye-catching pedi.

Deborah Lippmann Girls Just Want to Have Fun: The name of this polish says it all! Try a soft coral shade instead of the same ol pink you've been rocking since junior high. Coral is my go-to for spring and summer because I feel like it really pops against tan skin. Try adding a glittery gold accent nail like the one featured in this post.

Chanel Attraction: While we're talking about shades that make your tan pop, I'd be cray cray if I didn't include a white polish! This iridescent Chanel polish is a great option. Unlike many whites, it looks more like pearls than it does White Out. The last thing you need is a mani that looks like it's straight outta Office Depot.

butter London Cheeky Chops: How about some sunshine on your nails to match the sunshine in the sky? This light yellow is a soft pop of color, but also neutral enough to disguise those inevitable chips. Try it for a day at the pool.

What's your favorite nail color for summer? Whatever it is, be sure to perfect your mani and pedi with these can't miss tips. Happy sandaling!

Meet Megan Bowman, stylist and co-owner of Wild Horses Salon in Indianapolis. The Illinois native moved to the Circle City just shy of her 16th birthday, bringing with her a passion for hair and enthusiasm to practice on anyone--sisters included--who would let her experiment on their hair. Here's more about her Crazy/Beauty life in the world of hair styling:

When did you know you wanted to be a stylist? Was it something you always knew you wanted to do or a love you discovered later on?

Since I can remember (maybe the age of seven), I have wanted to do hair. My mom claims it was her zero hair skills that forced me to have the passion! But really I just always loved doing hair. I remember doing my hair for my 3rd grade pictures and making my bangs the perfect way I wanted them. Looking back, they DID look good too! It also helped having two younger sisters as my little dolls to always style. In 2nd grade my aunt gave me a perm, which led to me giving my sister a couple "fake perms!" Don't know how she had the patience! From then on I also used to trim my bangs and even my hair sometimes and my mom never even noticed! I think I just had an eye for making it look right.

What was your cosmetology school experience like? How did you choose your program?

My freshman year [of high school] we did some kind of survey that helped you decide a good career choice. Cosmetologist was one of my top results but showed that you could barely make any money in this career path. So I was set on my second choice of being a psychologist! Shortly after we moved to Fishers [Indiana] and at the end or my sophomore year my school counselor told me about their vocational program where you could do beauty school part of your school day. I figured I should give it a try since this was always my passion. So junior year I started at Hair Fashion by Kaye's. Immediately I loved it and knew it was the right choice! The day we did foil highlights with conditioner for the first time at school, I went to Sally and bought bleach and highlighted my sisters hair that night! Everyone thought I was nuts, but I just was so into it and eager to learn. This shortly led to me doing my sister's friends' hair, people she babysat for, to neighbors, to neighbors' friends, until I was running a bootleg salon on my basement literally at the age of 16-17! I just picked my teachers' brains at beauty school until I knew exactly what I was doing each night when I was working on people. I was taking new clients who I never had even met in my parents basement and just accepted "donations," since I couldn't legally charge. Needless to say, I never had to get a job in high school after that and by the time I graduated I didn't think there was anything I didn't know. When my teachers at school were too busy they actually had me help the other students because I just really knew what I was doing with all the practice I was getting at home.
What were the challenges you faced fresh out of school?

Well, luckily I was able to work at a booth rent salon out of school with an owner that worked with me on the amount I paid weekly for booth rent. A challenge I faced was having to wake up early without knowing I was going to have a client right away. Due to the amount of hair I did during school, I did have a decent clientele built and usually had at least one appointment on my book everyday. But I still did a whole lot of sitting. During this sitting, I did have a lot of time to type up flyers and such to get new clients and also help the other stylists in the salon. All of the sitting I did paid off, as it only took me three months to start paying the full booth rent that the other stylists paid.

You're a co-owner of Wild Horses Salon. How did you know it was right to make the move to being an owner?

Well, when I started at Wild Horses Salon 10 years ago, the owner told me she would sell me the salon some day. So someday owning the salon was always in my plans. Because our strip mall has five year leases, the previous owner approached me after the first five years about buying it. At that point, I was 25 years old and just not in the right mind set to do so, and don't think she was truly ready to give it up yet either. Towards the end of 2012 was when I really ready to take over. My younger sister and I work a lot of hours and also work in the front two stations, which meant we dealt with most people that walked in the door, and it was a good chance we were dealing with the people calling. After a while, it just kind of seemed like we may as well own the place with all the extra time we spent doing such things. So in April of 2013, I approached the previous owner and she also said she was definitely ready to be done. As a result, my sister and I as a team bought Wild Horses Salon.

Is it challenging to add the business side of salon management on top of your stylist career?

It ABSOLUTELY is challenging to add salon ownership to the job of being a stylist. Without having my sister there to take on our daily issues, I literally would have given up. There is never a day that there isn't something we have to deal with at the salon and lots of times it is with a client in my chair. I am so lucky to have the clients I do, because many people would feel that this was taking away from their "salon experience." I can't say I wasn't warned of such things, though. That's the way owning a business is.

What would be your number one piece of advice for those stylists dreaming of opening their own salon?

My first piece of advise would be to start your own salon. Do not buy a previously owned business. The amount of stress it adds to get all the stylists to adjust and not want to leave is literally unbearable. I have never lost sleep over anything in my life, and I had numerous sleepless nights, which just added to my stress. Also, when buying a previously owned business, everything is used and ready to break at any moment. Every month it seems something is breaking and needs fixed or to be bought new. I guess the perk is that hopefully there are a decent amount of stylists there when you purchase it, so you don't have to go search for stylists. Fortunately, we only lost two stylists in the transfer of ownership, but almost lost everyone at one point. It was very scary!
Also, if buying a booth rent salon, make sure to explain what being self-employed means and to let the stylists know what is their responsibility and what yours is as an owner. It's really easy to get your roles confused, which adds a lot more work to being a booth rent salon owner.

We love that you're a fan of Jada Beauty! What attracted you to the site and how do you incorporate it into your daily business? Would you recommend it to other stylists?

With Jada Beauty, I am able to suggest products to my clients via email and without pressuring them to buy things while they are in the salon. I have never been much of a "product pusher" so this helps me subtly recommend products to them that will benefit their hair without making them feel pressured. Also, the owners of Jada Beauty are long time family friends of my family. They are nice people that have great character. I would definitely recommend them to other stylists.

Trends are always changing, new products are always hitting the market. How do you stay on top of what's hot?

Furthering my education is always a great way to keep up with the trends. Again since we are booth rent at our salon, we can't make everyone go to hair shows. But we always throw out the idea, and a lot of our girls are excited to attend these shows and classes, and we are able to go as a group. We always have a great time and come back and share the things we learn with other stylists. We definitely have a team attitude at our salon which is hard to come by at a booth rent salon, and my sister and I are so grateful.

Stylists always seem to have their go-to product or products they can't live without. What are yours?

Anything Abba is usually my go to product. Abba offers many different products for all hair types and because it is all natural, it preserves color, doesn't build up, and rarely gives an allergic reaction to the scalp. I also love Moroccan Oil for the same reasons. It also can be added to color to help the hair take the color, which works amazing.

Every job has its ups and downs. What keeps you going even on the worst days?

My amazingly awesome clients keep me going on the worst days. When I went through the worst break up a while back, all I could do was work, because I had positive encouragement all day long from my clients. I even had two of my clients (a married couple) take me to dinner for Valentine's Day. Clients, too, are our counselors even though I know they say vice versa a lot of times! Also, our amazing team at the salon keeps me going on these rough days. Everyone kind of helps each other out and respects one another, which is more than I could ask for!

Pocahontas is otherwise known as my biggest hair idol of all time. Why? Throughout my childhood (and maybe some of my adulthood...Pocahontas is a classic, don't judge), I would watch as she effortlessly tied her hair into a braid and pranced around singing songs. While I am not down for prancing and singing songs in the wilderness, I am down for rocking an effortless braid in my tresses. Due to my obsession with my Native American girlfriend Poca, I have mastered 5 creative ways to add a braid to modern styles you probably wouldn't see in the Forest. Oh, and if you need a hunky John Smith, they will totally help with that too.

Look #1: Sock Bun Braid

Tips to achieve this look: Simply flip hair over and pull out two 1 inch sections of hair above the ear. Braid these sections. Pull the rest of your hair up into the sock bun. Cross the two braided sections and wrap them around the base of your bun. Secure in place by vertically sticking bobby pins into the base of the bun.
Must Have Product: AG Hair Fast Food

Look #2: Braided Side Messy Bun

Tips to achieve this look: One of my favorite braided styles, all you need to do is tilt head to the side and french braid loosely. Secure braid with a clear elastic. Pulling a few strands out of place, bundle up the rest of your hair and secure in place with another clear elastic and bobby pins. Spray lightly with hairspray.

Look #3: The Double Braid

Tips to achieve this look: Probably the easiest braided style of all time, simply braid a few 1/2 inch sections of hair and secure with clear elastics. Pull hair to one side and braid normally. Secure with another elastic.
Must Have Product: Sebastian Shaper Hairspray

Look #4: The Bobbed Braid

Tips to achieve this look: Difficult as it may look, you only need to braid hair loosely in the same way you would a french braid. Then tuck hair under and secure in place with bobby pins. For a more bobbed look, check out this tutorial. Use the same steps as Hannah, but add a braid before hand!

All my ladies with curly hair, please stand up! With summer just a hot minute away, prep yourself with this perfect technique for managing your curls by letting your hair air-dry. Whether you have tight curls or loose waves, this little air-dry curl tutorial will work like a charm.

Step 1- Out the shower, cocktail a curling cream with an argan oil and distribute throughout your hair

Step 2 - Use a large comb and run it through to evenly distribute in your hair. Take a towel and scrunch your hair (don’t use your hands)

Step 3 - Once you scrunch it up, you will be able to see your curl patterns. Take sections of your hair and twist them from the root to the ends. Some forward, some backward. Do this to your entire head, alternating smaller and bigger sections. Scrunch again with a towel (using your hands will cause frizz)

Step 4 - Let it air dry and enjoy!
