From childhood, through adolescence and into womanhood, our hair will have transformed with us in every aspect of our lives. It's a growing relationship that is often under-appreciated, as our hair is major part of who we are.
Growing up with natural hair, most little black girls only remember the early mornings with burnt ears from the pressing comb, or the late-night combing session with mama that involved at least an hour of pulling and prodding-in an attempt to control each curl and kink (and that is no fun!). What we have forgotten is the bond that we create, and there is something truly wonderful about getting to know your hair.
The Sisterhood - The natural hair movement is in full effect and gives anyone, whether natural, transitioning, or considering the "big chop", a forum to discuss what natural hair is all about. Women from all over are coming together, posting pictures via social media, blogs, and even being featured on runways and in magazines to share with one another why we love our hair the way it is. If you're in a rut and don't know what to do with your hair, there's a community out there waiting to hear your concerns and offer help.
The Goods - Since this movement started, we are learning and sharing so many great product recommendations from Shea butters, to coconut oils, to various shampoos and conditioners that are transforming our hair. Your hair will thrive and grow like it never has, and you'll find yourself trying a new style every week. Who doesn't like to release their inner diva on a daily basis?!
The Bond - As women, we love bonding, and our hair is no different. As my favorite guru Oprah always says: "When you know better, you do better". Getting to know your hair can be such a fun and exciting process, as you learn what does and doesn't work for you, and possibly be able to share with other Naturalistas. How exciting to create a bond you'll also be able to share with friends, family, and maybe even some day, a little girl of your own!
What's not to love about that? Don't forget to share with us your favorite Naturalista styles, go-to products and journey on natural hair!
For the love of hair and fun,
