Hair Product Expiration Guidelines

Let's be honest. We all have a product or two that has been in our arsenal for as long as we can remember. But when is it time to kick that old smoothing creme to the curb for good? Let us school you in hair product expiration guidelines.

When it comes to shampoo and conditioner, a good rule of thumb is three years unopened, 18 months opened. The shelf life of an opened shampoo or conditioner is cut in half as it's often in contact with bacteria from skin or diluted from drops of water. To make your shampoo and conditioner go the extra mile, choose a tube over a bottle. The bottom opening will keep unwanted water out of the product.

The same general timeframe can be applied to styling products. Hairsprays and other products in spray containers will last longer (up to FIVE years!) since the container is sealed and isn't subject to the same contamination and dilution as other products. Most hairsprays are alcohol based, which helps preserve the formula, adding time to their shelf life.

Why the expiration for unopened products? It's simple, really. Light, heat, and oxidation weaken a product's potency. And if a product won't do it's job, what's the point? Keeping unused products in a dark, cool place could help lengthen the shelf life.

Having a hard time keeping track of when you bought what? Try jotting the date down on the bottom of the bottle with a permanent marker.
