Looking to spice up a lifeless outfit, or add a little zing to your everyday 'do? Maybe you're just having a bad hair day and need something to tame those flyaways?! Headbands have been popping up everywhere lately- TV shows, Hollywood Boulevard, designer runways, and even the gym! These versatile accessories are an easy way to up your style, and can be worn in a number of ways.
Natalie Portman, Blake Lively, Rosamund Pike, and Kristen Bell beautifully demonstrate the glamorous touch that a headband can grace any any up-do with.
Elastic headbands, in particular, are great tools for holding your up-do into place in a creative way, or for managing long bangs. To get the fun "princess" look pictured below, Birchbox says to simply place one or two elastic headbands around the crown of your head and then weave through small pieces of hair and longer bangs from the side of your head. Add a bit of hairspray and voila! you have an elegant half-up hairstyle.
Stars like Nicole Richie, the Olsen twins, Emma Roberts and Lauren Conrad prefer to leave their hair down and then top with a hippy chic headband, accenting their boho style and keeping flyaways to a minimum. This look is a great option for elastic headbands or headbands that tie, both of which can be worn pulled down past the hairline, or perched lightly on the top of the head in more of a halo fashion.
A great aspect of this trendy accessory is that it is easy to DIY. Stylists recommend styling hair that is slightly dirty and, if you're looking for volume, teasing the crown slightly. Spritz hair with your favorite hairspray, place in your head band (you can secure it with bobby pins if you're afraid it will move) and finish off the look off with one more spritz of hairspray.
If you are looking to wear a headband for a special event, stylists across the country welcome the accessory into their salons when creating up-dos. Ash and Co., a salon in South Carolina, recently blogged about drawing hair-spiration from Gossip Girl Blake Lively's white godess look (shown above) to give a thankful bride the headband up-do of her dreams. Jada Beauty can help you find a great stylist to give you an equally elegant look.
An essential part of pulling off the headband look is finding one that matches your own style. Stores like Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Free People, American Apparel, Asos, and J. Crew all carry great hair acessory lines. If you are looking for something a little more unique, Etsy.com is a great place to search, as are many vintage stores. Or, check out the line of luxe headbands designed by Stacey Lapidus in collaboration with Mischa Barton, who regularly embraces the 60s-esque headband trend in her own style. And of course, bandanas are a similar and equally great option when looking to accessorize your hair.
Whether you're hitting the gym, walking down the aisle, running to the store, or jamming out at your favorite summer concert, headbands are a fun and easy way to rev up your style and easily manage bangs and frizz!
